Gas
Application Technologies (Commercial, Industrial Use)
Outline
Performance of gas appliances (noise, emission, combustion load, etc.) is affected by the fuel/air ratio and its actual mixing. High-performance gas equipment is under development by optimally controlling the mixture.
Upper two figures show the air ratio distribution formed through different types of burner mixers. The figure at the bottom is a schematic of their flames. In these air ratio figures, rich condition is indicated by red, and lean condition is indicated by blue.

Characteristic
We have developed a measurement technique for spatial distribution of fuel. Using this technique, we can obtain the air fuel ratio distribution in flames.
Future Tasks
To minimize the combustion noise and emissions, we are optimizing the air ratio distribution and mixing method.
Technical Term
Air ratio (= excess-air factor) :
The ratio of the amount of supplied air to the stoichimetric amount of
air.
Emission :
Exhaust gas which is produced by combustion, especially toxic for human
health such as NOx and CO.
